About

Playkla is a free website where you can play classic games right in your browser: homebrew games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and freeware and open-source games for DOS. There is nothing to download or install and no account to create: open a game page, press Play and the game starts.

What you will find here

  • More than 1,100 games: new homebrew games for the NES made by independent developers, and DOS games released by their authors as freeware, public domain or under open licenses.
  • The license of every game, shown on its page and in the list of licenses.
  • Genres and subgenres in the genre catalog, search by name, an A to Z filter inside each platform, and a monthly ranking of the most viewed games.

How playing works

NES games run in EmulatorJS with RetroArch emulator cores. DOS games run in v86, which emulates a whole PC with the FreeDOS operating system. The first launch takes a few seconds while the emulator loads.

  • The site works on computers, tablets and phones. On a touch screen, on-screen buttons appear over NES games.
  • NES games are played with the keyboard or a gamepad, and the Controls button under the game lets you change the keys. DOS games are played with the keyboard and, in some games, the mouse.
  • Save and Load keep a snapshot of the game in your browser, so you can continue later.

Where your data is kept

Saves are stored in your own browser, not on our server, so no account is needed. They stay on the device and browser you played on, and clearing the browser data removes them. On our side, page views are counted as anonymous statistics to build the monthly ranking. Details are in our Privacy Policy.

What to keep in mind

Emulation is not perfect. Most games run well, but some may show glitches in picture or sound, and on older phones demanding games can run slower than on a computer.

Games and their owners

We did not create the games published here. Every game belongs to its author or rights holder and is shared under the terms they chose. How we treat games and their rights is explained in the Copyright Statement. Rights holders can ask us to remove a game through the report form.
