Iodine Dynamics' 8-bit adventure about environmental issues, the manipulation of public opinion and whistleblowing, set in 1986.
You have just come home from skating when a mysterious Nintendo cartridge falls into your hands. With a friend and a cat, you find encrypted files on it and uncover a dark secret that threatens the town of Sunny Peaks. There are six stages: you explore, talk to townspeople, collect clues and play minigames, and there are several endings.
The story draws on research into how industries sowed doubt and steered public opinion in the 1980s. Iodine Dynamics is Arnaud Guillon, Chun Lee, Dustin Long, Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk; the project dates from 2018 and was released in 2019 after public playtests.
The ROM is pay what you want, including free, and runs in most emulators and on flash carts. To avoid creating more e-waste, the team made a limited run of 80 cartridges from reused hardware. The game was shown at art and media events such as Piksel and Ars Electronica.
